October – Track is my Religion so I’m back in the ‘habit’!
So October has been full of ‘ups’ and ‘downs’. Mostly ups though, which is why I love what I do. I filled the first part of my break catching up with old friends, eating pretty much whatever I wanted and enjoying my short-lived time off. Every year athletes get about between 4-6 weeks break. Depending on what event you do will depend on how long you have off. With sprinters such as myself, we do a lot of speed and powerful activities during the summer, through racing and the kind of training we do. This means our neural system needs a complete rest to calm down and ‘recharge’.
The first 5 days of my break were the best. I went to the cinema often, movies being a huge passion of mine and enjoyed large bags of popcorn all by myself (but have been told it’s for sharing!). I met up with friends that I was unable to see throughout the season due to training commitments and trips away and had a few birthday events to go to, which is always nice as it makes change getting all glammed up compared to the ‘boy’ clothes swagger I usually have going on. This was short-lived however as I got a bad case of tonsillitis and spent a week literally in bed!
It was my mother’s birthday at the end of the previous month so I was happy to be designated driver to her rightly deserved night out, which she loved cruising around in the drop-top convertible 1 Series. Another fun time but more spent keeping fit during my time off was going Roller Skating. Choice FM have a roller skating night called Roller Motion at the beginning of every month, so I attended that and had a great night!
I also do a lot of coaching and mentoring in schools. One of the things that I love about being an elite athlete, is that I get to inspire children through sport and make a difference in their lives. I go to schools every week and teach athletics through games and make it fun as much as I can. The kids love it and I enjoy leaving the session knowing they have learnt something.
This time of year there a lot of awards ceremonies to celebrate the years achievements in all kinds of fields. I was invited to the Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion, Television and Arts Awards held at The Lighthouse in South East London, my home town. I went to celebrate a friend’s nominee for a couple awards he had been put up for. It was an enjoyable night and I met a lot of great people, plus I got to show off my BMW 1 Series and elegant black dress!
The end of my month was sealed with Fright Night at Thorpe Park. This was the first time I had ever gone and it was so exciting, yet scary! Fellow BMW and Stephen James sponsored athletes Martyn Bernard and Conrad Williams were a part of the group of 10 that also came. It was a nice night and a great final hoorah before we really get stuck into winter training.
I am now in my 3rd week of winter training and as expected it’s really tough. But winter would not be winter if it wasn’t. As November really gets going my training will increase the further we get into November. As it gets colder the idea of going to warmer climates becomes more of urgency in my quest to find sponsorship to go abroad to train my hardest. At the moment it looks bleak, as it’s really hard to fit in any work and train so often and so hard, but to get to the London 2012 Games makes it worth while, I’m determined to not let anything stand in my way.
